Application Process
Ninth Grade Admission:
Step 1:Information Nights - Meeting held by school administration regarding requirements, explaining the entire process and a question and answer session.
- Area middle schools during late November or December
- Please contact your local middle school for dates
- At HMSA during December or early January
Step 2: Submit complete application - All applications received during the acceptance window between the designated hours and days are considered complete. Complete applications will continue on through to the next step of the process.
Step 3: Random Lottery – If the school receives more applications than there are available openings, the school will conduct a random lottery at the District Office. The remainder of the students will participate in a random drawing for the remaining spaces and any student whose number is beyond the available space is placed on the reserve active list. Admission preferences are listed below.
- Siblings of currently enrolled students (second year forward).
- Students who have continuously enrolled and completed grades 6 through 8 at a school governed by the Hawthorne School District.
- Students who have continuously enrolled and completed grades 7 through 8 at a school governed by the Hawthorne School District.
- Students who have continuously enrolled and completed grade 8 at a school governed by the Hawthorne School District.
- Residents of areas served by the Hawthorne School District.
- Children of the paid staff of HMSA and the District.
- Residents of other school districts within California.
Students on the wait-lists shall be carried forward from year to year.
Step 4: Assessment Exam for accepted students -
- Students participate in an Algebra and English Skills assessment exams taken on a Saturday morning in the spring. The exam will begin at 8am. Students are expected to be in their seats no later than 7:55am.
Step 5: Orientation Interview and Compact Signing for accepted students - Families meet with administration for signing of compacts and review of summer classes and work.
Step 6: (Recommended) Summer Bridge Orientation - August
Tenth - Twelfth Grade Admission:
Transfer applications are accepted throughout the year. Applicants will be placed on their corresponding waitlist.
